The Forest of Dean is one of the largest forests in the country, its scale along with its long and intricate history, the complexity of the underlying geology and diversity of the soils, makes the Forest of Dean a uniquely varied and important woodland.
Its origins as a royal forest pre-date the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Forest has long been used for its timber and it also has a rich mining history rooted in iron ore, sandstone and coal. Today, the Forest remains a working forest, managed by Forestry England.
