From a gentle river cruise to paddleboarding, there’s something for adventurers and leisure-seekers alike. Take a look at our handy guide to find out how you can make the most of the incredible waterways of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley.
Kingfisher Cruises
Take in the gorgeous scenery of the Symonds Yat Gorge and village on one of the lovely Kingfisher Cruises. The cruise begins on the pontoon outside The Saracens Head Inn at 11:30am and drifts along the river until 16:30pm so you can have an afternoon of relaxing and taking in the breath-taking views.
Dogs are welcome, and you can bring your own refreshments on board. It’s also possible to book the river cruise for private parties, family celebrations and club outings. Please be aware that the cruise may be postponed or cancelled in inclement weather, so it’s important to check on the day of your journey to avoid disappointment.
Canoe, Kayak & Watersports Hire
If you fancy exploring the rivers at your own pace, why not look at hiring canoes or kayaks? These boats allow you to paddle at your preferred speed, and there’s also the option of going on a guided tour of the Wye valley, which can be a great group activity.
There are multiple places which offer canoe, kayak, SUP and watersports hire, so you don’t need to travel miles to find somewhere.
SUP - Stand Up Paddleboarding
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a water sport that is only getting more popular as the years go by, so why not try a new challenge, and give it a go. It’s a great way to improve your fitness and balance skills, as well as have fun with your friends. As with all our river activities, you can hire all the equipment you need to go by yourself if you have experience, or if you’re a beginner you can go with a qualified instructor.
Inland Surfing
If you’re more of a thrill seeker, why not try inland surfing at the natural phenomenon known as The Severn Bore. This is a surge wave in Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, and it attracts surfers, paddleboarders, and kayakers to attempt to ride the wave. The best times to see, or surf, the surge waves is in the spring and autumn seasons.
This can be very dangerous so please take all necessary precautions if you are going to attempt it and only very experienced people should take part.
Keeping Dry
Love the river but don’t love getting wet? There are some stunning beauty spots where you can enjoy being by the water without having to get in it. Why not get yourself a picnic hamper from Forest Deli, so you can enjoy produce from local vendors while relaxing on the riverbank.
Whatever you decide to do this summer, you’ll find a whole host of activities to suit you and your family or friends. Whether you’re looking for adventure on the waves, or a way to destress from the hustle and bustle of normal life, you’re sure to find it in the beautiful rivers of The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. It’s the perfect place to spend your summer holiday.
