Nestled deep in the heart of the Forest of Dean, Danby Cottage is a peaceful and welcoming retreat designed with accessibility in mind. Originally built in 1904 for forestry workers, this charming cottage has been thoughtfully modernised to offer a comfortable, eco-friendly, and fully accessible escape for those with reduced mobility.
Located just half a mile from Yorkley village, guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the forest while still having easy access to local amenities, including shops, a health centre, and a bus stop. With direct access to scenic woodland trails from the garden gate, this is the perfect base for nature lovers, families, and those seeking a relaxing getaway.
A historic home with character
Danby Cottage is one of a pair of houses built in 1904 to provide accommodation for forestry workers who managed the surrounding woodlands. The cottages were named after the Earl of Danby, who was granted hunting rights in this part of the forest by King Charles II. A short walk from the cottage, Danby Lodge, a stunning 17th-century building, once served as his hunting lodge. Over the years, the cottage has evolved from its humble beginnings, maintaining its strong connection to the forest while being carefully restored to provide a comfortable and accessible retreat for modern guests.
A home designed for accessibility & comfort
Danby Cottage has been carefully adapted to provide a welcoming stay for guests with mobility needs, featuring a ground-floor bedroom with a ceiling hoist and an en-suite wet room. Wide doorways, a ramped entrance, and a wheelchair-accessible kitchen worktop ensure ease of movement throughout the space.
Inside, the cottage is spacious yet cosy, designed to be enjoyed all year round with central heating and a log-burning stove. Sleeping up to six guests, it is an ideal retreat for families, groups, and those looking for an accessible stay without compromising on comfort.
