About Us
We are friendly and welcoming community hub in the Forest of Dean in the attractive Severnside village of Newnham on Severn. After a fundraising campaign which started in 2018, our historic building was secured by the community in 2021 and has undergone an extensive and sympathetic renovation to provide a mixed-use hub for local people (and visitors) to enjoy.
The George is now one of the focal points of the village of Newnham and includes a café, a gallery and a second hand shop. We host talks, music events, art exhibitions, workshops and lots of creative activities for all ages. We’re lucky to have a prime spot on the beautiful heritage high street and we enjoy being part of an emerging creative scene in Newnham. We work closely with our neighbouring venues and businesses to ensure Newnham thrives.
Our aim is to source local produce for our café and we serve a range of hot and cold food and drinks as part of a thoughtfully curated menu. Our staff are passionate about food and it is important to us to be sustainable, affordable and to support the local economy where ever we can.
We are a volunteer-led organisation and our vision is to help others learn new skills, build confidence and collaborate in a supportive environment. Upstairs in our new second hand shop we sell a range of pre-loved clothing and bric-a-brac. There is lots on in our spacious upstairs gallery and we also have a bakery which is currently under development as we await a baker who shares our vision to create something unique for the benefit of local people.
Some of our regular fixtures include a knitting morning, yoga sessions and our monthly ‘talk at The George’ events which have showcased a range of different subjects from local author and screenwriter Dennis Potter to the life of a wildlife camerawoman.
