About Us
Set in five acres of tranquil, landscaped gardens in the beautiful Wye Valley, five miles from Monmouth and just an hour from Bristol and Cardiff, The Whitebrook is a haven from the stresses of modern life.
The Whitebrook is a proud holder of one Michelin star and four AA rosettes, as well as consistently being listed in The Good Food Guide Top 50 UK Restaurants, putting it amongst the top restaurants in the country.
Experience the Flavours of the Wye Valley
The Whitebrook is inspired by its surroundings. Forests rise all around, a stream meanders through the brook, goats graze in fields and deer amble past the door. This idyllic setting invites you to come and experience the peace and tranquillity of the Wye Valley.
It's this location that gives the restaurant its flavours; our aim is to present you with the most amazing local ingredients and foraged findings from the valley, which are used to create dishes that are individual and personal, which reflect a deep connection to the area.
In 2018 Chris took part in BBC2’s Great British Menu representing Wales and was one of the winners, serving his dessert ‘Tea & Cake’ for the NHS heroes banquet. He was also awarded straight 10s and the highest scoring dish of the whole series for his main dish ‘Everything but the Squeal’.
Chris Harrod Chef / Owner at The Whitebrook
"It has always been my ambition to be a chef since the age of seven, from family holidays travelling around Britain and Europe, staying in restaurant with rooms, a vision was born, to have my own restaurant in the country. A place where I could give my very best for the customer, with a few rooms for guests to enjoy after a wonderful dining experience, a terrace to enjoy a drink on a summer's day and all this surrounded by a garden where I can grow my own produce for the menu. At The Whitebrook I have gone one better, I am surrounded by the Wye Valley and some of the best produce in the country."
The Restaurant
Every dish at The Whitebrook, from breakfast through to dinner boasts locally sourced ingredients, many of which are foraged within a short distance from the restaurant. Pennywort, Three Cornered Garlic, Bitter cress, Wild onion, Hogweed, Lesser Celandine and Scurvy Grass, are amongst the foraged findings that inspire our style of food and brings the flavours of the valley to the plate.
Chris and his team have compiled a wine list championing local wines and beers, independent growers, organic and biodynamic producers and lesser-known grape varieties. Currently 40% of the wines are organic/biodynamic with a view to 50% by next year. Notable examples which reflect the wine and drinks menu include Limney Dry White Sussex, Pecoranera Tenuta Grillo Italy, Bourgogne Blanc ‘Le Petit Tetu’ Jean-Marie Berrux France, Frappato COS Sicilia, Kingstone Brewery and Apple County Cider.
This is combined with vegetables, fruit and meat that are carefully sourced from farms and producers around us, including in Ross-on-Wye, across the Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons and Pershore.
