About Us
Longhope was already inhabited by the eleventh century and The Manor of Hope is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The name itself means long, enclosed valley. Longhope is home to Harts Barn house, built by descendants of John the Sergent, and next to it is the tourist attraction, 'Harts Barn Craft Centre'. Harts Barn is home to independent craft shops, a cafe and the Harts Barn Cookery School.
At the end of the village you will see All Saint's Church which dates back to the 12th century, though it was heavily restored in the Victorian era. Opposite the church you will see Court Leet, which was once the local court and the adjacent timbered cottage was the gaol.
In the centre of the village, the recreation ground was bought by public subscription in memory of those killed in the Second World War and on the first Saturday in July, all activity in the village and surrounding area is centered on the Fete.
Robert Raikes, the leading publicist of the Sunday School movement was born here.
