At a distance of seven miles north of Ross-on-Wye, Much Marcle, Herefordshire is both a scenic and historically interesting place to visit.
Within the grounds of St. Bartholomew's Church, a huge and ancient yew tree offers shelter from either sun or rain. The church is well worth a visit with its 13th century nave, the 14th century altar tomb of Blanch Grandison and tombs of several members of the Kyrle family who were local benefactors.
'Hellens' is a manor house which is steeped in history. It has two haunted rooms, including those prepared for 'Bloody Mary' and her tutor, Fetherstone. An old cider mill house and a rare 17th century octagonal dovecote stand in the beautiful grounds and in the Stone Hall is a great fireplace bearing the crest of the Black Prince.
Many of the fields around the village are old cider apple orchards and Much Marcle is the home of Westons Cider. Although now a large business, it is still family owned and has been making cider since 1880. There is an interesting visitors centre as well as a restaurant and tea room.
At the crossroads in the centre opf the village, look out for Much Marcle Garage which is a re-used World War One aircraft hangar. It is designated a Grade II listed building and moved by Westons in 1926 from RAF Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, to service their vehicles.
Each summer the village hosts a popular steam rally.
