We’ve all been there when the weather turns against you, ruining all your plans for keeping the kids entertained over the Easter holiday and leaving you stuck in the house, but this doesn’t have to be the case! Here in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, we have plenty of days out for you to enjoy with the kids while also keeping warm and dry, so we’ve put together a list of just some of the things to do here that are perfect for when the weather is just not on your side!
Explore Clearwell Caves
Escape the rain by heading underground to explore Clearwell Caves, a vast natural cave system that has been mined for more than 4,500 years. While you arere there, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the nests of eggs that are hidden all throughout the caves as part of Clearwell’s eggstraordinary egg hunt.
Get crafty.
If you’ve got an aspiring artist on your hands, there’s plenty for them to get stuck into! Learn a new skill and get creative with a mosaic workshop from Rachel Shilston, or take part in one of Nature in Art’s activity days, with a range of Easter, Spring, and woodland-themed crafts to create!
Experience new flavours
Join Harts Barn Cookery School for their Wild Garlic Tasting Event, and enjoy a range of talks and demos about Wild Garlic, as well as plenty of opportunities for tasting! We've all marvelled at the incredible smell these little plants give off now find out how to use this much underused herb.
Travel on a steam train
Spend an hour and a half discovering some of the Forest of Dean’s beautiful woodland and countryside scenery, all from the comfort of a steam train! The Dean Forest Railways shiny locomotives are quite the sight to behold steaming through the forest. The perfect nostalgic escape for all the family.
Watch a movie
Cosy up to watch a movie at the Palace Cinema, one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas still operating in Britain!
Discover stunning architecture
Here in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, we are lucky enough to have not one, but two stunning cathedrals nearby: Hereford Cathedral, and Gloucester Cathedral. Shelter from the elements among the impressive architectural features, and discover over 1000 years of history! Plus, if you’re in Gloucester Cathedral, be on the lookout for the cheeky chicks that have escaped all around the building!
Have fun at Dick Whittington Park
One of the largest indoor play barns in the South West, Dick Whittington Park offers the chance to escape from the rain in their heated indoor play area, with slides, climbing frames, trampolines, a climbing wall, and wavy mirrors!
