The great news for this season is that many of our attractions are still open. You can explore an area rich with history and heritage, climb castle towers and delve deep into underground caves. Plus our cafes, pubs and restaurants are ready and waiting to serve you delicious food and drink too.
Our castles and ruins are always a spectacular sight and each season brings its own magic and atmosphere to these ancient buildings. You can't beat a castle for an inspiring day out in winter, especially one with a tower to climb and a nice cafe too. From Goodrich Castle, one of the most complete medieval strongholds in Britain, to Tintern Abbey, the best-preserved medieval abbey in Wales.
Steam train rides through ancient forest in winter offer a respite from the cold and scenic views. The Dean Forest Railway has several stations each offering something unique to see and cream teas can even be booked for a special treat too. For the kids Perrygrove Railway offers a miniature train ride with an indoor village and two playgrounds to enjoy as well.
Museums and galleries abound in the Dean Wye including the Musem of the Forest the Dean Heritage Centre and Nature in Art filled with beautiful art inspired by the natural world.
